Will Vitamins Help Me Manage My Weight?

Vitamins and Weight Management

Plenty of options exist that are marketed toward weight management. From special meal plans to “magic pills,” we’re always trying the latest and greatest breakthroughs in an attempt to have some control over our weight and health.

As we become older, we also tend to pay a little more attention to our body – including all of its shortcomings. Some of us look to vitamins as a way to stay healthy. But can vitamins help you manage your weight? If not, what benefits do they provide?

The Facts about Vitamins

As these “power supplements” become increasingly popular, we’re left to wonder how much of an impact they can really have on our body. For the purposes of this article, we’ll focus on weight management. So what does the research tell us?

Research is Conflicted

Studies on the use of vitamins vary greatly. We know that they’re good for our body in general, and can help with lowering our risk for cancer, increasing energy levels and boosting performance – including that of our metabolism, which plays an important role in weight management. But the question is… just how much do vitamins do? Science doesn’t have a conclusive answer, as researchers have different opinions on use and effectiveness.

Eating Whole Foods is Key

Effectiveness aside, vitamins are intended to supplement the foods we eat. Our body’s primary source of nutrition is intended to come from wholesome food, not from man-made pills. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins and dairy are packed with vitamins, minerals and other nutrients we need to survive and function. No vitamin can do what whole foods do!

Labels Don’t Tell Everything

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not regulate supplements as strictly as they do with medication. For that reason, it’s possible for some vitamin labels to be inaccurate. They may boast extra health and weight benefits that aren’t entirely possible.

Not Everyone Needs Vitamins

Some individuals can benefit from vitamins more than others. If you eat plenty of whole foods and take care of your body, you may not need them as much as someone who struggles with vitamin deficiencies. However, if you’re over the age of 50, are pregnant, eat a limited diet or have had surgery on your digestive track, you may actually benefit greatly from taking vitamins. The benefits specific to weight-loss, however, may not be as conclusive.

If I Need Vitamins, How Do I Select Them?

Should you have all the facts together and decide that vitamins are appropriate for your weight management journey, consider these tips before purchasing any:

  • Talk to a healthcare provider about what vitamins your body needs
  • Consider the amount you need to take
  • Shop for brands you trust, or have heard positive reviews about
  • Be as specific with the nutrients you need as possible

Still Have Questions?

If you’re still unsure about taking vitamins or what role they may play in your weight management journey, consider talking to your primary care provider or a dietitian about your questions. These are individuals who are specially equipped to handle topics about nutrition, weight management and more. Don’t be afraid to ask!
