Self-image can be a tricky subject to navigate on the weight management journey. For many of us, our weight is tied directly to how we see ourselves. Years of media influence, opinions from family/friends and culture at large shape our perceptions of ourselves and our bodies. If we’re not careful, those perceptions can easily be influenced.
How Self-Image Affects Weight Management
Getting started on the weight management journey can be hard enough. Getting started when you have poor self image is even tougher.
When we don’t have a positive view of who we are, all areas of our life are affected. Some days, our weight management journey may not seem like it’s even worth the stress. Other days, it can be difficult just to get out of bed to exercise or drive to the store for healthy food.
Poor self-image also contributes to stress, anxiety and depression. When our mental health is suffering, it affects us physically, too. We lose sleep, struggle with food and battle a lack of energy. When you add up all of these factors, our weight is almost always affected.
