Seasonal Stress: Managing the Unwelcome Holiday Guest

joy manage seasonal stress

The holidays are often a special time filled with family, friends, giving and indescribable holiday cheer that is unique to the season. It is a time for us to come together, reconnect and return to the very basic things in life — joy, generosity and the love and affection that binds us!

  • Busy Schedules Packed with Responsibilities
  • Financial “Burdens”
  • Difficult Family Dynamics
  • End-of-Year Blues
  • Pressure to be “Perfect”
  • Overindulging and Emotional Eating
  • Negative Physical Side Effects (weight gain, high cholesterol, etc.)

Although many people report feelings of increased stress and anxiety during the holidays, this does not have to be the case for YOU! There are a number of specific strategies that you can employ to help ward off seasonal concerns. We list a few of them below!

Protect Yourself against Seasonal Stress – It’s Possible!

This holiday season, prevent yourself from becoming overwhelmed and sidetracked by following these simple suggestions:

  • holiday ornamentFind Healthy Emotional Outlets – If your negative emotions typically cause you to turn to food, consider eliminating stress another way. You might read a book, take a nap or get together with some friends or family, for example.
  • Get Active – Engaging in adequate activity will not only help you burn off any unwanted calories, but it will also help you relax by releasing endorphins!
  • Spend Quality Time with the People You Care about – Rather than forcing yourself to spend time with toxic friends and family members, make time for the people you care about the most and who make YOU feel good. It’s okay to politely decline invites to large gatherings or celebrations you’d rather not attend. Do what makes you happy!
  • Free Yourself from “Extra” Responsibilities – There’s no way you can do it all, so don’t try to! Prioritize your responsibilities and remember to make room for relaxation, too. Amid the shopping, decorating, cooking and planning, remember to focus on the true meaning of the season.
  • holiday giftMake Time for Self-Care – You owe it to yourself to be kind to your mind and body. Make room for things that make you happy and relaxed, such as a nap, a massage, time with friends or a good book.
  • Seek Support – Having accountability makes sticking to your goals during the holidays a lot easier! Find someone (or some people) who you can talk to about your frustrations, concerns, and goals for weight and health. They can help make sure you’re on track!
  • Stick to a Budget – Holiday expenses can add up, but you shouldn’t feel pressured to go beyond your means. Plan out your budget ahead of time, and reference it throughout the season to avoid financial burnout!

By taking care of yourself, planning ahead of time and making room for the things that truly matter, managing seasonal stress is completely possible! This holiday season, YOU are in control – and you can start the New Year off right!
