Sometimes one of the biggest struggles we face on our journey with weight can simply be staying on track with taking care of ourselves, and doing so requires a positive state of mind!
Here are some ways you can stay on track with managing your weight and health that aren’t necessarily focused on nutrition or exercise, but are instead on your overall happiness:
1. Schedule Family Time – You wouldn’t skip an important work meeting, would you? Add in a couple of evening events, such as board games, movie nights or going out to community events, with your family just as you would pencil-in a work meeting to your busy schedule!
2. Try Something New – Trying new things gives your brain a workout as it builds new pathways to learn an activity, so try to switch-up your routine with a new activity this week!
3. Laugh Today – Laughing not only eases stress, promotes social bonding, and lowers blood pressure, it may also boost your immune system.
4. Remember Your Real Goal – It’s about more than the number on the scale, so recognize that health, quality of life, energy or confidence might be your real goal. Put a reminder on a sticky note in your room or as a daily reminder in your phone, and don’t get discouraged by potential setbacks — you’ll reach your real goal within good time!
5. Sleep is Crucial – Studies show that individuals sleeping only five hours per night were 73 percent more likely to be affected by obesity. The National Sleep Foundation recommends 7-9 hours of sleep per night for the average adult, so make sure you’re catching some “Zzz’s!”
6. Focus on Having Fun – Go on a trip with someone you love, go shopping, go fishing; do not let vacation time slip away. Studies have found that taking vacations reduces the stress from your every day life, which will improve your overall health!
7. It’s About More than Weight – Measure your success with personal goals such as running your first 5k, feeling energetic, reducing medications you are taking and other achievements!
