We’re right in the middle of Spring, a blissfully sunny month with warm weather, vibrant colors and the freshness of all things new. If you’re itching for a chance to get outside and soak up the sunshine, why confine your workouts to the four corners of a gym?

Whether you’re someone who prefers to stay close to home or get out into the world for a thrilling adventure, there’s tons of outdoor activities you can try to break up the monotony of your workouts. Getting outside is not only good for your weight, but your mental well-being too.

Activities to Help You SPRING into Action

Whether it’s a weekend adventure or a week day outing to relieve work stress, the following activities can help you get outside with a fun and engaging fitness component.

Spring and Summer Gardening

Pick a piece of land from your yard and identify what crops could grow there this spring/summer. If you don’t have access to land, a container garden for your porch or patio will work. Herbs, small fruits/veggies, and vibrant flowers will liven up your living space and give you something to be proud of. If you’re growing food, a garden will also produce healthy options.

Make a Splash and Hit the Water

It’s heating up outside, so try cooling off with engaging water activities. Beyond swimming in your backyard or community pool, you can also find a local lake/river/park to go kayaking, canoeing or fishing. Take advantage of this activity before fall and winter arrive!

Hike for a Full Body Workout

A hike in the woods is a great way to burn calories since you traverse different terrains. That means you’re working different muscles in your body, and you’re also taking in a lot of oxygen and releasing endorphins. For a more effective workout, take a pedometer with you.

Biking is a fun, simple way to get out of the house and get active. Whether you and a group of friends/family go for a ride around your neighborhood, or you take your bikes to a nearby trail, this outdoor activity can be very invigorating. It’s fun to get off your feet and move faster.

Spring is the PERFECT season to go camping because it’s not too hot or cold outside. It’s a great opportunity to connect with nature and escape the digital world we’re constantly surrounded by. Bring some healthy foods to roast around the campfire and you’re golden!
