Dining Right: Make Healthy Choices While Eating Out

Healthy Choices when Dining Out

Managing your weight through healthy nutrition habits goes far beyond what’s in your kitchen and grocery cart – it’s also about the decisions you make when dining out!

In today’s modernized world, busy schedules and our love for convenience make restaurants a desirable commodity. Eating out is a popular option if you’re low on time, on-the-go, or simply looking for new, tasty and creative cuisines! However, just like preparing food in your own kitchen, it’s important to be mindful of what (and how) you’re eating when dining away from home.

Dining Out? Consider these Tips to Stay on Track

  • Scan the Menu Beforehand – If you know what restaurant you’re headed to, see if they have a menu online. By scanning the menu before you arrive, you’ll be more prepared to make healthy choices that are in line with your goals. When pressed for time to order, you may be more tempted to choose a meal that’s less than ideal.
  • Make Requests – Are you eyeing a certain dish, but not sure if you can “customize” it to fit your particular health needs? Don’t be afraid to ask your waiter! Perhaps you’d like your chicken grilled instead of fried, or a lighter dressing to go with your salad. Don’t be afraid to speak up!
  • Order Water before/during Your Meal – By drinking plenty of water, you can control an unruly appetite that may come in handy if you’re trying to watch your portion sizes. For more on the benefits of water and proper hydration while you’re managing your weight, CLICK HERE.
  • Eat Slowly – Dining out should be an experience! Eat slowly to help you build awareness around your portion sizes, but also to enjoy your food!
  • Dine with an Encouraging Social Circle – Don’t be afraid to let others know you’re trying to manage your weight and make healthy choices. Whether you’re eating with friends, family or coworkers, ask them to be respectful and understanding of your choices.
  • Watch Your Add-ons – Dressings, cheeses, condiments, sauces…these add-ons can load your plate with additional calories, sugars and fats. Make sure you’re eating everything in moderation, and don’t be embarrassed to ask for lighter versions of your favorite extras.
  • Box it Up – Restaurants are notorious for providing more-than-enough portion sizes. Once you’re full, ask your waiter for a take-home box. You’ll not only feel better and save on calories, but you’ll also have food for later on!

Dining out doesn’t have to wreck your weight management progress! There are plenty of ways to stay in control while eating in a place other than your own home. The key is to PREPARE and think ahead of time about the choices in front of you! Bon Appetit!
