Managing Your Weight When Your Family May Not Understand

Managing Your Weight When Your Family May Not Understand

There are plenty of things you can do alone, like taking a leisurely walk to blow off steam, cooking a nice meal, getting a massage or watching television.

These are simply things that don’t require much support or company, but the same can’t always be said about navigating your journey with weight and health.

As you likely know, this kind of journey can feel like an uphill battle. It gets difficult to climb at times, and you often need to stop or slow down. Other times, triumphant feats may inspire you to share your success with others — and then there are those moments where you need a helping hand to guide you along the way.

Support Systems Are Important – but Not Always There.

Having other people alongside you on your weight management journey is a valuable asset that should never be overlooked. The support of others can keep you consistent with your behavior, inspired to keep going and knowledgeable about each step you take — and oftentimes, families are the perfect example.

However, family support doesn’t come easily to everyone. As a matter of fact, many family members may not understand the serious commitment you’ve made to your weight and health. Unhelpful feedback can come in many different forms including, but not limited to:

  • Pressuring you to join-in on family meals
  • Not listening to your concerns
  • Telling you that you don’t need to “worry so much”
  • Using insensitive language
  • Showing jealousy about your progress

How Can You Manage Unhelpful Family Support?

Not having the support of your family and loved ones can be quite difficult, as these are usually the people you share everything with. And with such a challenging journey, what steps can you take to make sure you’re getting the support you need?

  • Find a Local Support Group – Browse online for a weight management support group that meets up in your area, and see if you’re a good match with the other members. Need help finding one? The Obesity Action Coalition (OAC), producer of the Your Weight Matters Campaign, offers a state-by-state list.
  • Talk to Your Doctor Some of your biggest fears may come from addressing weight and health directly, and your doctor likely has the answers and advice for those questions.
  • Find a Trusted Counselor Struggling with your emotions? What about your specific behaviors that you’re trying to change? A counselor can help you work through these details.
  • Find a Registered Dietitian Food is a big concern for most people on this journey. Can a Registered Dietitian help you meet your weight and health goals? Let’s find out by CLICKING HERE.
  • Take Steps for Self-care – Journal daily, stay inspired with motivational quotes and playlists, spend time with people you care about where weight is not a topic of conversation, and do other things that keep you rejuvenated.
  • Attend Weight and Health Events – These kinds of events are packed with like-minded people with the same kinds of experiences, and they usually offer great education, support and resources. The 2017 Your Weight Matters National Convention is taking place NEXT WEEK, August 10-13, and this is a GREAT event to attend! Onsite Registration is currently available. Support matters – and it can make the difference between small progress and big steps toward your goals. If your family or other loved ones aren’t on board, you’re not alone. Get creative, branch out and remember that YOU deserve the help you need!
