A Look at Resolutions: What are You Resolving for Your Health?

This year, make better health a resolution.

It may be mid-January, but the momentum of a new year is still holding strong for many of us. Maybe you’ve dug out an old, weathered journal to record your thoughts and plans for 2019. Perhaps you even purchased a new one, coupled with a promising blank planner and a set of sticky notes for motivational reminders. You’ve got resolutions this year that you’re bent on attaining, but are any of them based solely on your health?

Popular Resolutions

Sure, some of the most popular resolutions year after year are health-focused. Consider these common goals that are almost always repeated with gusto:

  • Lose a certain amount of weight and keep it off
  • Drink more water and less sugar-sweetened beverages
  • Get more exercise to help with weight-loss
  • Quit smoking or cut back on alcohol

There’s nothing wrong with these resolutions. Everyone wants better health, right? We all want to feel confident in the skin we’re in. And not coincidentally, more than half of adult Americans are facing an uphill battle with their weight and want to do something about it.

But are you wanting to lose weight to look/feel more attractive? Are you trying to fit into old clothes, spike your metabolism or garner “oohs” and “ahhs” from loved ones? What’s your motivation for weight-loss, and some of your other health-related goals that may be on your resolution list? You might be overlooking benefits that add quality (and quantity) to your life.

Resolve to Better Your Health

If you truly want to make 2019 your year, make sure you’re looking internally as opposed to just externally. Remember the sole reason we have the Your Weight Matters Campaign — because it makes a difference in your health, which also affects your family, career, and so much more.

Did you know that more than 50 diseases and health conditions are related to excess weight and obesity? A few common ones (but serious nonetheless) include:

  • Type 2 Diabetes
  • Heart disease, hypertension, high cholesterol
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Sleep apnea
  • Some cancers

Fortunately, there are many weight-loss options out there — and the Obesity Action Coalition (OAC – Producer of the Your Weight Matters Campaign), is advocating for weight issues to be taken more seriously without stigma, as well fighting for greater access to treatment options in the medical community. We know that your weight is important for more reasons than just one.

So before you carry on with your 2019 resolutions and invest in that new weight-loss supplement or fad diet trend, ask yourself what your motivations are. Are you considering your overall health, wellness and happiness? Or, admittedly, are your goals just a little bit superficial?
