You frequently hear weight management compared to a journey. That’s because there’s a clear starting point but no defined ending which you can predict. It’s a lifestyle decision that you’ll walk for the long haul, no matter what your goals are. So you better be prepared!
Don’t Pack Lightly
Let’s keep with the journey metaphor. If weight management is a road you’ll be traveling for some time, you need the right tools. What items would you pack in your backpack? What resources do you want convenient at all times? These are the essentials you’ll want to stock-up on.
Most people will tell you things they wish they would have done when they first started to manage their weight. That’s because a solid beginning can make the rest of the way easier. What does this mean for you? Invest in the right tools right now if you want continued success.
Weight Management Essentials
These six tools and resources are must-have’s for the road with weight:
Health Resources You Can Depend on
You’ve got to be able to access dependable health information. This can be knowledge from a health professional such as a primary care physician, dietitian, fitness coach or whomever. But it can also be digestible online and/or print resources which you can easily absorb. For a great starting point, check-out the education in the Obesity Action Coalition’s Community.
A Strong Support System
Two is better than one… and three is better than two! It’s invaluable to have people in your tribe who support you. These people should know your goals, know your circumstances and cheer you on. They should also walk this journey with you and assist whenever necessary.
An Attitude of Self-care
Weight management is all about being kind to your body and to the process. An attitude of self-care will make time for physical activity, grocery shopping and regular health exams. It will also help when the going gets tough and you need the self-affection to pull you through.
A Stocked Kitchen
Double your chances of staying on-track if you prepare most of your meals in your kitchen. Stock-up on lean meats, fruits and veggies. Keep a storehouse of spices and seasonings for bonus flavor when you need to switch things up. Always have access to drinking water!
A Way to Measure Progress
There are many ways to measure progress with weight management. You can start with a scale or tape measure, but you can also look to “before” pictures, improved energy levels and alleviated health conditions. Keep a journal to track all of your physical, mental and emotional changes.
There are no doubt many other items you can add to your arsenal, but these make for a great foundation. As you learn more about yourself and your journey, keep adding to what’s inside!
